Have You Wondered How a Frost Free Faucet Works?

For those of you that live in climates that experience freezing temperatures, you need to buy a frost free faucet to protect your home and property.   Before companies such as Woodford Manufacturing started making their quality frost free faucets, it was common for pipes to rupture when water froze inside the faucet.  The damage occurred when the outside temperature started to warm up and water was unable to drain out around the expanding ice blockage.  The water pressure mounted until the pipe burst, thus causing the water damage.

Now we are lucky to have a great selection of well-designed frost free faucets.  They are not only made differently from standard faucets, but most importantly they are installed differently.  They protect your home from ruptured pipes if installed properly and all of the following recommendations are met.  Please read below to learn why a frost free faucet is different from a standard model, and how it works.

·         A frost free faucet is equipped with a pipe that extends into the house (at least 8 to 12 inches) where it is warmer and thus greatly reduces the risk of freezing.

·         It has an interior shut-off valve.

·         When properly installed with a downward pitch toward the nozzle, it lets water drain completely out of the faucet reducing the likelihood of water building up inside.

·         All outside water systems should be winterized by turning off the shut-off valve and removing any hose or other devices from the faucet*.

*Hoses must not be left attached to the faucet as it prevents water from draining.

We encourage you to take advantage of Eagle Mountain Products’ wide array of step-by-step videos that are available to help with installing a frost free faucet or to repair a leaky one.  Along with buying anything you need for outdoor watering, you will be able to find troubleshooting guides and parts for current or obsolete Woodford faucets.

More Answers to Common Questions Regarding Woodford Faucets

Our goal at Eagle Mountain Products is to ensure our customers buy the right outdoor watering device for their needs and then install the product correctly.  We want you to be 100% satisfied with your purchase of a high-quality Woodford product.  In addition we are the official online retailer for Woodford Manufacturing and carry the entire line of products.

We hope the following Q and A provides answers to some of your questions regarding the exceptional Woodford outdoor faucets:

Q:  How do I fix a leaky faucet?
A: There are several things that can cause a leaky faucet. A few examples are the packing nut may not be tight enough or the packing or vacuum breaker may be worn out and needs to be replaced.  If you are unable to determine where the leak is coming from, please call us at 800-308-0864.  Our knowledgeable staff can help to diagnose the problem and show you which repair kit you should purchase.

Q:  Is an outdoor faucet or hydrant repair easy to do?
A:  If you need to repair a Woodford product, we have a library of how-to videos to walk you through the steps.   Furthermore all of our yard hydrants can be repaired from the top of the unit so you are not required to take it out of the ground.

Q:  What is a Pressure Relief Valve (PRV)?
A:  Our Patented Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) prevents the faucet tube from bursting in freezing conditions, even if a hose is left connected to the faucet.  We have a video demonstrating how a PRV works in the faucet tube.

Q: Do I need a vacuum breaker, and if so, how do I install it?
A: If you have ever taken your hose off and had a splash-back of water, a vacuum breaker is designed to prevent that from happening.  We sell the Woodford Model 50 Auto-Drain Double Check Backflow Preventer that is the first ASSE 1052 approved automatic draining double-check backflow preventer. When a hose is removed from a Model 50 equipped wall faucet or yard hydrant, two linked but independent checks move as one to open a path through the valve allowing water to drain completely and prevent freezing.  Please see our Vacuum Breaker Repair installation video.
