A Frost Free Faucet is Uniquely Designed and Installed

You may be aware that if you live in an area with freezing temperatures, you need a frost free faucet but you may not know how one works.   

Before frost free faucets, it was common for faucets in cold climates to rupture when water froze inside the faucet tube.  The problem occurs when outside temperatures begin to warm and water in the pipe is unable to drain out around the expanding ice blockage, which causes the water pressure to mount and the pipe to burst. 

The difference in installation for a frost free faucet is that it is installed with a downward pitch toward the nozzle in order to facilitate water draining completely out of the faucet and reducing the problem of water building up inside the tube.  Hoses must not be left attached to the faucet as this prevents the water from draining.

The Story behind the IOWA® Model Y34 Hydrant

While we know that plenty of people own an IOWA® Model Y34 Hydrant as it is our most popular yard hydrant, we are not sure how many people know the story behind it.  The Woodford Manufacturing Company celebrated 75 years in business in 2004 and they will certainly be around in another twelve years to celebrate their 100^th birthday!   

The story begins in 1929 when J.C. Woodford bought a company and the manufacturing rights to the IOWA® (Y34) Yard Hydrant and opened a sole proprietorship to start the Woodford Hydrant Co.  In 1946 the company adopted its current name.   

Nearly a decade later the company started producing commercial wall hydrants, and in 1963, manufactured the first residential faucets.  The founder, J.C. Woodford held more than 60 patents at the time of his death in 1979, of which many dealt with the design and manufacturing of the company’s faucets and hydrants.  However the company did not stop there, as today Woodford Manufacturing holds patents on more than 200 inventions and many are incorporated into our products.

Our selection of yard hydrants includes the IOWA® Model Y34 that is one of our most popular hydrants and is the first product that Woodford starting manufacturing in 1929.   It is a frost free model and is intended to be used year-round.  Some of the features it offers are a variable-flow, long-life packing, and a rod guide that eliminates side pull on the rod.

If you decide on a frost free model, you are protected against freezing as the shut-off valve for the hydrant is below the frost line when installed properly.  Once the hydrant is shut-off and all devices removed from nozzle, the hydrant will drain and not freeze.

The Dependable IOWA® Yard Hydrant

As the official online retailer for Woodford Manufacturing, Eagle MountainProducts is proud of the great reputation of our Iowa Yard Hydrants.  Even though we sell many quality products, the Iowa hydrant holds a special place in the company.

The Woodford Manufacturing Company began in 1929 when J.C. Woodford bought a company and the manufacturing rights for the IOWA® Yard Hydrant.  This marked the beginning of the Woodford Hydrant Company. In 1955 the company expanded into making commercial wall hydrants, and in 1963, they introduced their first residential faucet.

Here is some basic information about our IOWA hydrants:

• The IOWA® Model Y34 hydrant is our most popular yard hydrant and allows for an immediate water flow even in sub-zero temperatures.  Variable-flow, long-life packing, a rod guide that eliminates side pull on the rod and a 3/4" inlet and 1″ galvanized steel pipe are just a few of the features offered. 
   
• The IOWA® Model Y1 hydrant also provides an immediate water flow even in sub-zero temperatures.  A few of the Y1 features include a variable-flow plunger; long-life packing a rod guide that eliminates side pull on the rod and a 1" inlet and 1 ¼” galvanized steel pipe are just a few of the features offered.   

Even though Woodford has been manufacturing the IOWA® hydrant since 1929, and many improvements have been made through the years, all parts are interchangeable.  An owner of an IOWA hydrant is able to make all repairs from the top of the unit without having to remove the hydrant from the ground. In the event one of our hydrants needs to be repaired, we carry the entire inventory of parts and provide videos on hydrant repair as well as adjusting the linkage.
